Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is something that men experience from time to time. While it can be puzzling to understand why things like this happen, there are certain underlying causes that can be linked to it. Factors can range from the simple to more complicated, and sometimes a small change in your daily lifestyle can dramatically improve the outcome.

The penis remains rigid during the erection process through the relaxation and compression of muscles. A smooth muscle regulates the level of blood flow into the penis, and venous drainage channels are used to cut off the flow after the penis has become rigid. Erections are lost when the penis cannot receive any more of the relaxing-chemicals. When this happens, the penis becomes soft and cannot become erect anymore.

Before we talk about what keeps an erection from occurring, let’s address what causes an erection. Most people will simply take this process for granted, even though it is very complicated and any issue can lead to erectile dysfunction. An erection begins when the brains ends signals down the spin and to the penis, causing the nerve fibers to react and increase blood flow to the area. Certain stimulants are used to arouse a male, which can be through and of the five senses.

While most people think about erectile dysfunction as the inability to have an erect penis, it is actually the inability to keep or maintain an erection for sexual pleasure. This can be something that happens on a regular basis or from time to time, each of which have different contributing factors. Understanding what keeps an erection from occurring will help address the issue and give you the right tools needed to have a fully-erect penis once again.

There are two main categories in regards to erectile dysfunction, the mental and physical. Mental reasons for not having an erection can be linked to stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. Sexual excitement is what stimulates the brain into arousal, and having doubt on the mind can be distracting enough for a man to lose his erection. If there are no open lines of communication between partners, the man may wonder if he is performing well, and the nervousness keeps him from being sexually active.

Other factors, like stress and depression can be linked to things like family troubles, work, and being mentally exhausted. While some of these issues may go away on their own, those with persisting problems should talk to a doctor to see what solutions can be utilized.

At the same time, there are several different physical reasons why a male may be unable to keep an erection. Some of the many contributing factors include obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and clogged arteries. These all can have an effect on the body and prevent it from functioning in the proper manner in regards to sexual intercourse.

There are other physical causes for why a man may not be able to get an erection, either. Things like drugs, tobacco and alcohol can prevent the proper flow of blood through the body. Smoking can have a very damaging effect in this regard because the arteries can be blocked and prevent the right amount of blood to flow into the penis. Drugs also include prescription drugs, which can have a number of different effects on the body and keep a man from getting an erection.

Lastly, surgical procedures can cause erectile dysfunction as well. Even operations that are on the spine and brain can prevent the proper signals from reaching the penis and creating an erection. Other surgical procedures that can stop an erection include surgery on the pelvis as well as radiation therapy for certain types of cancer. It’s important to understand that several different types of procedures can prevent an erection, even if it does not appear to be linked at first glance.

In the end, it’s important to critically think about what is causing your erectile dysfunction and what you can do. Many solutions include regular exercise and a healthy diet to combat obesity and high blood pressure.
